Course Overview

This course provides training in basic through to more advanced field geological methods, with applications to geological problems in the varied structural and geomorphic settings of New Zealand. As well as introducing students to geological mapping in sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks, the course includes mapping and analysis of active tectonic features and incorporates a variety of geophysical techniques. New Zealand provides an unparalleled variety of tectonic settings for these studies conducted in different parts of the country. The course emphasizes the understanding of three-dimensional structure and lithology, and time-dependant deformation in this dynamic, tectonically-active region.

Geologic Setting

New Zealand straddles the Indian-Australian/Pacific plate boundary with a large part of the boundary exposed as the Alpine Fault of South Island. To the north, is the subduction trench immediately off the east coast of North Island and its effect on the onshore geology is dramatic. The NZ region is thus one of the best natural laboratories for understanding Earth systems and processes. The nature of the plate boundary systems changes progressively southwards from volcanic-dominated back-arc; subduction-related accretion; strike-slip escape tectonic; erosion-dominated transpression; to offshore subduction in the Puysegur Trench in the far south. All of this takes place in less than 1000 km along strike! Bathymetry of New Zealand region.

Logistics:

The field school starts in, and  travels through, South Island before moving to North Island and finishing in Auckland. Accommodation will be in university-affiliated field stations, hotels, backpackers, and holiday parks. Each student will need a sleeping bag and other personal gear. Compasses, base maps and literature will be provided. Internet access will be available in most towns. Evening meals will be provided. Faculty:

Teaching is by faculty from universities, and by government research scientists. All supervisors have extensive research and teaching experience in the geology and/or geophysics of New Zealand.
